A MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS OF Boophilus microplus (ACARI: IXODIDAE): NON-PARASITIC PHASE Rev Salud Anim.
de la Vega,R; Díaz,G; da Fonseca,A.H.
Multivariate statistical methods are relatively new tools for data analysis. They have a lot of applications in biological researches: nevertheless, for several reasons, they have not been widely employed in this subject yet. Recently, present authors published a paper applying multivariate statistics on non-parasitic phase of Anocentor nitens. In the present article Boophilus microplus has received a very similar statistic treatment. In this paper, the influence of different incubation conditions was studied in groups of 12-15 individuals in each of the 24 combinations of six temperatures 24, 27, 30, 32, 34 and 36ºC and four relative humidity values, 100, 80, 75.5 and 70% over the cycle variables of B. microplus. According to the results, the best...

A MULTIVATIATE ANALYSIS OF Anocentor nitens (IXODOIDEA: IXODIDAE): NON-PARASITIC PHASE/[title] [title language=es]ANÁLISIS MULTIVARIADO DE Anocentor nitens (IXODOIDEA: IXODIDAE): FASE NO PARASITARIA Rev Salud Anim.
de la Vega,R; Díaz,G.
Multivariate statistical methods are useful tools complementary to classic univariate methods. In biology, they are used in several scenarios where data structure, classification and grouping are necessary. Nevertheless, it seems they have not been employed in the study of non-parasitic phase of ticks or any other arthropod. In this paper, the influence of different incubation conditions was studied in groups of 12-15 individuals in each of the 24 combinations of six temperatures 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, and 34ºC and four relative humidities 100, 80, 75.5 and 70% over the cycle variables of Anocentor nitens looking for establishing the most suitable environmental conditions to increase or decrease ticks performance and to apply these knowledges to zoogeography....

Ação larvicida de derivados arilsulfonílicos da (+)- cânfora e da (+)- isopinocanfona sobre o carrapato Boophilus microplus Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Chagas,A.C.S.; Prates,H.T.; Leite,R.C.; Furlong,J..

ANATOMY AND HISTOLOGY OF THE FEMALE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM OF Boophilus microplus (ACARI: IXODIDAE) Rev Salud Anim.
de la Vega,R; Díaz,G; Galán,M; Fernández,C.
The knowledge of the anatomy and histology of the female genital system in ticks is very important as a basic tool in all species in relation to morphological sciences and evolution, physiological events like ovulation, sexual behavior, maturation and mating, and also to research the interrelation tick-hemoparasite. The anatomy and histology of the female genital system in Boophilus microplus are scarcely studied. In the present paper, the female genital system of this tick has been considered as a whole and morphological and functional interrelations between different structures and also some other related items has been presented. Unfed and partially engorged females were employed in the study. The quality and resolution of images are remarkable because...

Assessment of weight gain and biological parameters of Rhipicephalus sanguineus females fed artificially via capillary tubes Ciência Rural
Cunha,Nathalie Costa da; Rangel,Charles Passos; Piranda,Eliane Mattos; Rezende,Jania de; Teixeira,Rafaella Câmara; Fonseca,Adivaldo Henrique da.
This study assesses the weight gain of partially engorged Rhipicephalus sanguineus females that were artificially fed via capillary tubes and the influence of capillary tube feeding on the biological parameters of the non-parasitic stage of the species. The ticks were sorted into four groups, each containing ten females of a homogeneous weight. The groups were each treated for different feeding times, 2, 6, 12 and 24 hours. The weight gain of the artificially fed females was measured, and the biological parameters of the non-parasitic stage of the tick were observed for each treatment group. The statistical non-parametrical Dunn and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare the results. The mean weights (mg) were 0.2±2.4; 4.3±5.8; 7.4±5.8 and 12.0±11.2 for...

Abstract Ticks represent a large group of pathogen vectors that blood feed on a diversity of hosts. In the Americas, the Ixodidae ticks Amblyomma cajennense are responsible for severe impact on livestock and public health. In the present work, we present the isolation and molecular identification of a group of culturable bacteria associated with A. cajennense eggs from females sampled in distinct geographical sites in southeastern Brazil. Additional comparative analysis of the culturable bacteria from Anocentor nitens, Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Ixodes scapularis tick eggs were also performed. 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses identified 17 different bacterial types identified as Serratia marcescens, Stenotrophomonas maltophilia, Pseudomonas fluorescens,...

Brown dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus parasitizing the bird Coereba flaveola in the Brazilian cerrado Ciência Rural
Szabó,Matias Pablo Juan; Pascoli,Graziela Virginia Tolesano; Marçal Júnior,Oswaldo; Franchin,Alexandre Gabriel; Torga,Khelma.
During a survey for ectoparasites on birds in a small reserve of the Brazilian cerrado (savannah) a male adult Rhipicephalus sanguineus tick was found attached to the eyelid of the bird Coereba flaveola. Both tick and bird are presently common in Brazil, however, to best of our knowledge, the association of this tick species with this bird species has not been reported before. This observation may be an accidental finding but might also be an unknown route for the dissemination of the tick. The species R. sanguineus was introduced in the country with the colonization and should be considered a research target for the surveillance of tick-borne diseases.

Estudo comparativo do aspecto da hemolinfa de algumas espécies de carrapatos (Acari, Ixodidae): descrição da variação hemocitária de adultos de Amblyomma cajennense (Fabricius) Koch Zoologia
Carneiro,Maria Elisa; Daemon,Erik.
The hemocyte composition of adults of Amblyomma cajennense (Fabricius, 1787) Koch, 1844 adults consisted of three basic cellular types: prahemocyte I (PR I), plasmatocyte (PL) and spherulocyte (ES II). Among the ixodids observed (A. cajennense; A. dissimile Koch, 1844; Rhipicephalus sanguineus Latreille, 1806; Anocentor nitens (Neumann, 1897) Schulze, 1937; Boophilus microplus Canestrini, 1887 and Haemaphysalis sp.) only A. cajennense was different in the adult hemolymph colour. It changed from amber to deep blue as the ixodid age advanced. This fact could be associated with the presence of hemocyanin in the hemolymph and points out the need to develop further investigations about the Ixodidae hemolymph pratein composition as well as the function of all...

Occurrence of Amblyomma longirostre in Cyanocompsa brissonii in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil Ciência Rural
Gressler,Lucas Trevisan; Pereira,Larissa Quinto; Brustolin,Joice Magali; Lovato,Maristela; Monteiro,Sílvia Gonzalez.
ABSTRACT: Ticks are arthropods that are highly competent in transmitting pathogens to animals and humans. Among these, the genus Amblyomma is the most representative within the Neotropics. Amblyomma longirostre ticks are naturally distributed in countries of South, Central and North America. Their immature stages preferentially parasitize birds (Passeriformes), while adult stages are usually found on rodents. Therefore, reports of this tick species on wild hosts is epidemiologically relevant, especially because of these ticks' potential for transmitting pathogens to other wild and domestic animals, and also to humans. Thus, the aim of this study was to report infestation by Amblyomma longirostre on Cyanocompsa brissonii in southern Brazil.
